今天把杜克大學(xué)商學(xué)院教授親授申請(qǐng)者的8條面試黃金法則搬了出來(lái),給大家好好解析一下,保準(zhǔn)對(duì)大家的面試準(zhǔn)備起到醍醐灌頂?shù)淖饔谩?/p>
在開始分析之前,我還是想先嘮叨兩句,面試對(duì)錄取的結(jié)果到底有多關(guān)鍵,大家看看下面教授說(shuō)的這段話就明白了:
The interview is my favorite part of the admissions process, because it allows us to get to know applicants on more personal terms. Similarly, it is the applicant’s opportunity to interact with a member of the Fuqua community and get a better sense of how they might fit in as a member of our team.
你看,教授說(shuō)了,面試是我most favorite part。這是一句很帶有主觀色彩的觀點(diǎn),但我不得不說(shuō),這也普遍代表了廣大教授的心聲。教授畢竟是人嘛,比起冷冰冰、密密麻麻的文字,skype帶來(lái)的畫面和聲音更能刺激多巴胺的分泌,而教授對(duì)于錄取與否的決定,也難免會(huì)多多少少摻雜著主觀性在里面。沒(méi)有絕對(duì)的公平,你要更好的在面試中展示你更多的personal的東西,讓你文書材料中闡述的觀點(diǎn)在教授腦子里變得活靈活現(xiàn)起來(lái)。

好了,面試有多重要這里不再贅述,下面我們一起來(lái)好好琢磨琢磨教授給出的八條建議:
Know your story. Make a point to present your background, experiences, and interests in a cohesive manner that the interviewer will be able to follow. Your interviewer will have access to your resume, but not necessarily your application—so don’t assume the interviewer has information you shared only in your application.
上來(lái)第一條建議就太寶貴了。不要認(rèn)為教授能夠像你一樣熟悉自己,他們?yōu)g覽過(guò)你的application package,但是除簡(jiǎn)歷外,其他的信息能記住多少呢?所以,建議大家在面試中要時(shí)刻提醒自己stand in the perspective of your interviewer, never take everything for granted. 要把你所有經(jīng)歷的關(guān)聯(lián)捋清楚,要成體系,它們又對(duì)你的興趣發(fā)展起到了什么作用,都要仔細(xì)考慮考慮。經(jīng)歷再豐富,形不成合力,也只能說(shuō)明你positive,而非outstanding.
Be sure you’re able to clearly articulate why you want to pursue the Master of Management Studies degree and why you want to study at Duke.
這條建議絕對(duì)點(diǎn)中了很多申請(qǐng)者的死穴。總是想方設(shè)法說(shuō)自己有多“強(qiáng)”,有多“好”,但其實(shí)有多“適合”是教授更關(guān)注的點(diǎn)。多去研究研究目標(biāo)學(xué)校和項(xiàng)目的特點(diǎn),和自己的職業(yè)發(fā)展需求匹配嗎?你碩士畢業(yè)后想直接到銀行工作,但人家項(xiàng)目培養(yǎng)目標(biāo)是輸送博士人才,換做你是教授,會(huì)錄取這樣的學(xué)生嗎?我的一個(gè)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)學(xué)生,放棄了Umich的offer,選擇入讀最好的博士跳板之一uwm,正是因?yàn)樗呀?jīng)鐵了心讀到博了,這就叫匹配,這就叫“適合”。
Be aware of your strengths and how you could leverage them in the program. Also be aware of your weaknesses and consider how you plan to address them. In particular, think about how you’d hope to improve upon your weaknesses using your experience in the program.
我認(rèn)為,真實(shí)大于完美,你若真那么完美,就沒(méi)必要繼續(xù)求學(xué)了。了解自己是一件很難的事,但你必須努力這么做,不僅了解自己的長(zhǎng)處,更要知道短板在哪。我也建議申請(qǐng)者們不要擔(dān)心把短板暴露出來(lái),更重要的是你要闡釋如何解決你的短板,如何通過(guò)在對(duì)方項(xiàng)目的學(xué)習(xí)來(lái)彌補(bǔ)弱點(diǎn)。我們?nèi)mu讀computational bio的學(xué)生,生物背景出身,跟教授明明白白講清楚了我編程是比不過(guò)你們cs學(xué)生的,教授說(shuō)這就是你來(lái)我們這里的意義啊~你翻翻course list, 讀讀description,有沒(méi)有適合的課程?沒(méi)有咱們就再去cs系看看他們的課程。
Be prepared, but natural. Avoid over-rehearsing your answers or reciting prepared responses word-for-word.
這一點(diǎn)又回到了問(wèn)題的根本,面試之所以有著舉足輕重,甚至是一錘定音的作用,正是因?yàn)樗鼙憩F(xiàn)出文字材料所不能表現(xiàn)的鮮活。如果不能在面試中做到自然,這場(chǎng)面試從一開始就注定了失敗。面試就是一次你和教授的聊天,放松心態(tài),專注于你們談話的話題,語(yǔ)言有停頓有思考,這都是自然松弛狀態(tài)下的正常現(xiàn)象,這要遠(yuǎn)比新聞聯(lián)播式的交談來(lái)的更讓你對(duì)面的判官舒服。我發(fā)現(xiàn)一些美本的學(xué)生之所以在面試環(huán)節(jié)完勝陸本,并不是因?yàn)樗麄冇⒄Z(yǔ)能力更勝一籌,而往往是他們?cè)谖鞣浇逃难障拢萌绾芜M(jìn)行efficient academic communication.
Answer your interviewer’s questions in a concise and complete manner. We encourage you to share solid examples of your teamwork, leadership, and experiences to support your answers. However, be sure you do so in an effective and succinct way, and always make sure you actually answer the question that was asked.
我們中國(guó)人在回答問(wèn)題時(shí)喜歡先講理由后講結(jié)論,這恰恰與西方思維相反。美國(guó)人更直接,他們希望在問(wèn)你問(wèn)題后,首先得到的是直接的答案,之后才是適度的解釋。你一上來(lái)長(zhǎng)篇大論舉例子去支撐自己的論點(diǎn),到后來(lái)也許都不記得自己到底是要表達(dá)什么論點(diǎn)了( ╯□╰ )。你試想,如果上來(lái)拋出你的答案,你心頭的石頭也落地了,你想好了3條論據(jù),哪怕只說(shuō)出2條,最后一條忘了,也無(wú)傷大雅吧。
Conduct yourself appropriately. Most interviews take place via Skype, and we expect you to dress and act professionally. Be sure you choose a quiet location for your interview.
很多同學(xué)曾經(jīng)問(wèn)過(guò)我,“我是穿正裝好還是穿的隨意一點(diǎn)好”。答案其實(shí)很簡(jiǎn)單,得體就好。沒(méi)有必要像投行工作人員一樣西服革履。男士polo衫+牛仔褲,女士一身休閑正裝就足夠了。言談舉止要體現(xiàn)自己的職業(yè),不能太過(guò)隨意,周圍不要吵吵鬧鬧,更重要的是,背景一定要干凈,如果來(lái)不及收拾房間,攝像頭正對(duì)著白墻或用一塊淡淡的純色的布做背景都是可以的。
We encourage you to ask questions. The interview is your opportunity to learn more about the Fuqua community, and your interviewer will be happy to share his or her experiences with you. However, please avoid asking questions for which you could easily find answers on Fuqua’s website.
我要告訴大家,其實(shí)無(wú)論教授在面試中是否邀請(qǐng)你提問(wèn),你都應(yīng)該在教授結(jié)束他們的提問(wèn)后主動(dòng)爭(zhēng)取自己提問(wèn)的機(jī)會(huì)。這里的提問(wèn)一定要有所準(zhǔn)備,要深入、有意義。比如你可以問(wèn)問(wèn)教授哪門選修課是最受歡迎的,是不是可以跨學(xué)院修課呢,畢業(yè)季通常有哪些公司會(huì)來(lái)招聘,項(xiàng)目有自己的career service嗎,提供哪些服務(wù)呢?有哪幾種獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金可以供我申請(qǐng)呢?最不該問(wèn)的問(wèn)題就是錄取的結(jié)果是怎么樣,能發(fā)給我獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金嗎,或是一些在官網(wǎng)上明確列出的信息,比如項(xiàng)目是幾年制的,中國(guó)人占多少比例,錄取的平均分是多少。
Keep in mind that your interviewer is truly interested in you and wants to get to know you better! Interviews that are conversational are often the most successful ones. Therefore, make an effort to be curious and get to know your interviewer, too.
第八點(diǎn)建議提醒的是我們最常會(huì)犯的錯(cuò)誤,也就是害怕問(wèn)題多,時(shí)間長(zhǎng)。我認(rèn)為,時(shí)間越長(zhǎng)、問(wèn)題越多,代表了教授對(duì)你越感興趣,越想多了解你。如果問(wèn)了兩三個(gè)問(wèn)題就把你打發(fā)走了,你也不要對(duì)結(jié)果有太多的期待了。心態(tài)上要擁抱這次面試機(jī)會(huì),面試就是你的舞臺(tái),即便你在同學(xué)中并不是侃侃而談的那位,但也要在面試中表現(xiàn)自己健談的一面,不僅積極的回答問(wèn)題,也要積極的提出問(wèn)題,一場(chǎng)輕松愉快的交談,誰(shuí)會(huì)不喜歡呢?
